Only until the end of the nineteenth century did English Literature, first taken as a type of entertainment, become a subject of study in the UK. The reason why literature had to be, or could be, studied collectively as a subject was partially because of the emergence of the British Empire; the promotion of the culture of the ‘mother’ country to the colonized was therefore necessary for acculturating the ruled. Similar to anthropology and archeology, literature was a subject for the non-westerners to acquire “Englishness” more systematically, or sometimes scientifically. However, studying English literature in the era of globalization requires a fresh perspective through which we do just learn what had happened but examine more critically the failure of the British Empire, and its possible contributions to human civilization.
